From Our Senior Pastor
By: Paul Thompson

In the opening of the first chapter of his fantastic book, The Meaning of Marriage, Tim Keller writes,
“I’m tired of listening to sentimental talks on marriage. At weddings, in church, and in Sunday school, much of what I’ve heard on the subject has as much depth as a Hallmark card. While marriage is many things, it is anything but sentimental. Marriage is glorious but hard. It’s a burning joy and strength, and yet it is also blood, sweat, and tears, humbling defeats and exhausting victories. No marriage I know more than a few weeks old could be described as a fairy tale come true. Therefore, it is not surprising that the only phrase in Paul’s famous discourse on marriage in Ephesians 5 that many couples can relate to is verse 32. Sometimes you fall into bed, after a long, hard day of trying to understand each other, and you can only sigh: “This is all a profound mystery!”
On Sunday, January 6th we will begin a 6-week series designed to explore and unravel a bit of that mystery that is Christian marriage. Our series is entitled Sacred: God’s Design for Marriage. Our series won’t be like a running Hallmark movie, but instead will be a rich, in-depth look at the what, why, and how of biblical marriage, all centered around 6 fundamental commitments.
Obviously, this season in the life of our church family has great potential value for our married couples (of all ages and stages), but it will also be of great value to our students who hope/plan to one day be married, our adult singles and single-agains who are seeking God’s best for their lives, as well as our eldest members who can be powerfully influential marriage mentors for their own children and grandchildren as well as to younger members of our church. Besides revitalizing, restoring, and strengthening marriages in our church family and beyond, we also hope to establish a God-honoring ‘culture’ of marriage at Calvary based on His Word. In a world of shallow commitments, easy immorality, and frequent divorces, God calls us to something different. Something better. Something sacred.
Our series will culminate in a very special “Celebration of Marriage” on Sunday night, February 10th at 6. On that night, all married couples will have an opportunity to celebrate the covenant of marriage that God has blessed them with and personally renew their commitment to their spouse. More information will be coming later about this special event.
Will you do this – commit to attending each of the 6 worship services so you don’t miss a single challenge or commitment. Also, commit to faithful attendance and participation in your Life Group as you discuss the scriptures about marriage and some of the principles in Keller’s book on marriage that we will use as a guide. Also, keep up with your daily readings and prayer times with your spouse, or if not married, on your own. And plan now to be in attendance at the Celebration of Marriage on February 10th.
And pray. Begin to pray now that God will be honored, His Word will be taught, understood, and obeyed, and that marriages in our church will be transformed for His glory, our good, and our witness in this world.
I can’t wait to begin!
Pastor Paul
