From Our Senior Pastor
By: Paul Thompson

About this time last year, we introduced our 2017 discipleship emphasis “Life on Life”. Hundreds of the Calvary family responded by committing to a year of intentional, accountable, face-to-face personal disciple making. As we have grown together, we have learned that discipleship is not a destination, but a journey. It’s not a course to be completed, but a culture to be lived out every day. We are also learning that true discipleship doesn’t end with our personal development and growth. It’s bigger than our deeper understanding of the Word, better prayer life, or more consistent quiet times. True discipleship – as taught by Jesus – always turns itself outward. It must progress from asking and answering the question, “How am I doing?” to the more missional (and Christ-like) question, “How am I doing at loving the people God has put in my life?”
Learning to love the people God has placed (or will place) in my life with the love of God and the Gospel is the focus of our 2017 Discipleship Banquet. This catalytic event will take place on Sunday, September 10 at 6pm in the Fellowship Center. I hope and pray that our church family will show up in force this night to celebrate what God has done this year among us and see where God is taking us in 2018. Our theme this year is “My Mission Field”.
Our goal will be to continue to move our disciple-making culture beyond focusing on “getting closer to Jesus” and moving on towards the aim of living our lives – in every area – as if Jesus was living through us. A life lived for God and others; a life that sees the world they live in as a mission field; a life lived to make much of God is our aim.
I hope you and those you love will be here on that night as we continue the journey of discipleship together!
We also wish to appreciate our thanks to Jeremy and Erin Allen for their service to Calvary these last 4 ½ years and for their investment in the lives of our students. Jeremy and Erin have been disciple-makers who helped advance the cause and establish a culture of disciple-making at Calvary among our students and their leaders. We will continue to build on that foundation. As they return to Kansas, we know that God will continue to bless their ministry and to expand their kingdom influence.
As we prepare for the next phase in our student ministry, please pray for us as we finalize a new strategy and structure that we think will be very effective at making disciples – leading unbelievers to Christ and developing believers into spiritual champions with a biblical worldview.
As we move forward, let us take to heart and apply to life the challenges of Romans 12:11:
“Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.”
And Galatians 6:9:
“… let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”
For His Glory Alone,
- Pastor Paul
