From Our Senior Pastor
By: Paul Thompson

In the journal A Guide to Church Revitalization, Eric Bancroft suggests in his article entitled, “Are We There Yet?” the following 4 measures of a church on its way to health and vibrancy:
An Appetite for the Word
Bancroft writes, “… your church’s appetite will be weaned off of cultural commentaries, psychological assessments, and other incomplete offerings and will instead hunger for the Word of God. They will begin to understand that this was what Jesus prayed for them when he said in John 17:17, “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.” Their growth as Christians is directly connected to their exposure and obedience to the Word of God.”
A Culture of Discipleship
“A local church that is being resuscitated by the Word of God will become more genuinely relational. Your goal … is to see a culture of discipleship where people who have been washed by the Word and had their minds renewed by Scripture are increasingly seeking each other to enjoy the relationships God has given them, both old and new alike.”
A Passion for Evangelism
“In time, as God chooses to bless his people, they will love proclaiming the excellencies of God found in Jesus Christ (Phil 3:8). Signs of this in your church include a shift from individuals expecting the church to evangelize for them to individuals doing the evangelizing themselves; a desire to increase funding for evangelism efforts local, national, and global; and testimonies of how God opened their mouth and made it clear how they should speak the truth to others (Col 4:3-4).”
A Unity of a Plurality of Leaders
Speaking primarily about elders and deacons, Bancroft states, “Unity in any local church starts with its leadership. While the men might come from a variety of backgrounds and have different gifts, they should share a common theology and philosophy of ministry. (Unity) comes through hours of shared conversations, books read and discussed, lessons taught and considered, ministries evaluated and thought through, and people cared for and prayed over together.”
A continuing focus on the Word, a developing culture of discipleship, a people increasingly living as everyday missionaries, and implementing a biblically faithful, unified leadership structure are all essential steps to where God is taking us as a people in 2017.
We begin 2017 with a short message series called REPLANTED. The idea is simple: What would we do as a church if we were starting all over again as a church plant right here in our city? I’m praying that God will use this series to motivate us to be everyday missionaries. And most essential to our growing vitality is the launch of our Life-on-Life Discipleship focus beginning on January 8th at 6PM for our 3rd Circle Banquet. I hope and pray that every committed member of Calvary joins us for this event as we learn together what a disciple-making culture will do for our church. And finally, pray for our deacons and leaders as we move forward in 2017 with a formal proposal for Elders.
May God bless us in 2017 with His favor and with many opportunities to glorify Him and make Him known in our city and beyond!
For Christ alone,
Pastor Paul
