From Our Senior Pastor
By: Paul Thompson

Do you ever use the phrase, “Dog Days of Summer”? Although I have occasionally said it and more frequently have heard it, I didn’t really know what it meant. So, I had to do a little research to understand its actual etymology. To the Greeks and Romans, the “dog days” occurred around the day when Sirius, the so-called dog star because it is it the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major, appeared to rise just before the sun, in late July. Today, we usually just mean that it’s the hottest, muggiest, do-nothingest time of the year. But not here at Calvary! Not only have we been busy with mission trips, mission camps, and a host of other activities, we have also been diligently praying and planning for a fall season of ministry that we hope will do nothing short of launching a permanent disciple-making movement in and through our church. For two years we have been talking about our most fundamental strategy as a church, depicted by 3 interlocking circles. These circles are the indispensable essentials of our calling and mission to make disciples: Circle one: corporate worship, circle two: life groups, and circle 3: life-on-life relationships. Beginning this September, we will introduce our 2017 initiative all centered on that 3rd circle. Look for lots more to come through the month of August in your Life Groups, in worship, and on our website.
On another note, worship attendance has caused us to require the addition of a second service. While we have much enjoyed our season of worship together in one service, it simply is not feasible to remain in one service and to remain in the sanctuary. After much discussion, prayer and careful consideration, it was determined that our best course is to return to two services and to host both of them in the sanctuary. If the time should come that a second service would be better suited to a larger venue, then we would consider the Fellowship Center again. Here is the new schedule (beginning August 14): Early Worship - 8 am. Life Groups - 9:15 am. Second Worship - 10:30 am. In addition, the Fellowship Center will be the open on Sunday mornings at 9 am for coffee and fellowship. This will give you a great opportunity to engage guests and to see folks from the other service or other classes.
And on a final note, our fall kick-off for Midweek at Calvary will be on Wednesday, August 10th. Our weekly fellowship meal reconvenes. Our students begin all-new series. And our adults will begin a new Bible study inspired by the classic Jerry Bridges work, The Pursuit of Holiness. I hope you will plan now to be part of our fall lineup.
And remember: We are a family of everyday missionaries who make disciples. That’s what God calls us to be. That’s who we are. That’s what we do.
And I’m glad to be able to be and do that with you!
For His Glory,
Pastor Paul
