James 1:22-25 (CEV)
22 Obey God’s message! Don’t fool yourselves by just listening to it. 23 If you hear the message and don’t obey it, you are like people who stare at themselves in a mirror 24 and forget what they look like as soon as they leave. 25 But you must never stop looking at the perfect law that sets you free. God will bless you in everything you do, if you listen and obey, and don’t just hear and forget.
The Contemporary English Version of James 1:22-25 captures the essence of what I often fear after completing an important message series: That after hearing God’s Word, understanding God’s revealed will, and receiving God’s clear instruction, that we simply nod in agreement but move on virtually unaffected, as if we had not heard, did not see, and did not know what God is expecting of us. I know I have been guilty of that very thing far too often.
After completing this “COMISSIONAL LIVING” series, I sincerely hope that the needle has moved for us towards being a genuinely outward-focused, Gospel-driven family of missionaries who make disciples. I pray that we will do far more than give nodding agreement or lip service to the challenges we heard, but will begin to genuinely, honestly, consistently live them out. The church is not some place we go, a service we attend, or a program we enjoy. It is not a Sunday (and sometimes Wednesday) ‘event’. It is who we are. It is the new identity God has given us and the new family He has adopted us into. And it’s our new life mission: glorifying God by making disciples. I sincerely pray that over the coming months, this biblically faithful image of a church as a sent out people, unique from this world, but fully engaged in reaching it, will take hold here. I pray we will be as active as we have ever been (and more so!) in:
Praying for the lost all around us and for opportunities to share a clear Gospel message
Inviting people into our homes and our church, demonstrating hospitality for the sake of the Gospel
Joining the everyday rhythms of people’s lives all around us – engaging them, befriending them, and loving them with Gospel intentionality
Sacrificing our time and resources and personal preferences so that we may be legitimate ministers of reconciliation
Serving the community we live in and the people we encounter everyday, demonstrating the Gospel even as we speak it
Loving the lost all around us – enough to tell them the truth about Jesus
Let’s no longer sit back and wait for them to find us. Let’s go and seek them. Let’s not simply expect our church services to be attractive to them. Let’s make our lives and witness attractive. Let’s not think simply about ourselves and what we need and want. Let us serve the city in love. And let’s not assume that most people we encounter understand or have even heard a clear presentation of the Gospel of Jesus, much less truly know and follow Him. Let’s look for openings and opportunities to demonstrate the change the Gospel has brought in our lives and let’s share the message of the Gospel that can change theirs. Let’s be COMISSIONAL!
I love you and am honored to serve alongside you.
For His glory,
Pastor Paul
