From Our Senior Pastor
By: Paul Thompson

Dear church family,
There is so much going on this month that I can only hit the highlights! Here are a few:
Our churchwide study through Ephesians is off to a great start! If you haven’t jumped in yet, it’s not too late. Daily reader’s guides are available from the church office or on the website. If you aren’t part of a Life Group, there couldn’t be a better time to join one. And I hope you will continue to pray for the messages during Sunday Worship and invite others to come as well.
Our 2nd Sunday night worship this month will be a joint service with Dothan Community Church. I am very excited about the new mission partnership with DCC that we will announce on that night! Please make every attempt to be here at 6:00 pm. We will worship together in the Fellowship Center and have a time of fellowship immediately after. Please consider bringing a favorite dessert or finger food for the fellowship.
Please also be in prayer for the Personnel Committee and me as we develop a long-range staffing strategy. Pray for us as we seek to discern God’s will for staff positions and structure to take us into the future. We are currently in the process of interviewing for an Interim Children’s Director. As you pray for us in that process, please remember to pray for Mike and Rashele Brooks and family as they transition to a new calling.
We are approaching the deadline for participation in our 10-Day Biblical Tour of the Holy Land. If you wish to go, you must register this month. We have a great itinerary and the benefits of walking where Jesus and the Apostles walked and seeing and learning in living color are immense. If you have questions, please contact me soon.
Finally, many good results (seen and unseen) came from our 4 days together that we called “ADVANCE”. One particular area that God has been challenging and convicting me on is the need for dedicated, corporate prayer time. We have Bible studies, fellowships, training events, etc., but praying together has been lacking. We will begin addressing that real need on Wednesday nights. I will continue to teach, but we will also have a significant period of time dedicated to prayer each week. I am praying that this will grow into a genuine prayer movement that brings salvation and deliverance to individuals, restoration to families, and strength and health to our church body. If you are not already serving in one of our key ministry areas on Wednesday nights, please join us at 6:00 pm in the Sanctuary for Midweek Prayer and Bible Study.
“ … you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.”
- Ephesians 2:19-22

Letter from Greg Pendergrass About Church Basketball
By: Greg Pendergrass

Dear Church Family,
It is not often I get to address everyone as a group, but feel like it is very important to explain our decisions related to our future basketball activities. Before doing such, please let me express how much I appreciate the opportunity to work with such a wonderful family the last three years. The dedication, care and love that you display to the children of this community has made a true difference.
The first step in looking at our future plans was to seek the advice and input of people that have recently been involved with Upward and Calvary Hardwood. Our focus group of coaches, referees, and other leaders met last week and we agreed with these “big picture” ideas:
The main purpose of any basketball program is to use basketball as the “tool” to share the love of Jesus to all players, coaches, parents, etc.
Our program should allocate more time in providing an effective devotion study. We need to develop a program that best utilizes our limited resources. The program(s) should provide an opportunity to be more outward instead of inward focused. Please note that there was a consensus within the meeting that provided direction and initiated a clear course of action. This consensus, along with a lot of thought and prayer within the staff, has led us to make the following decisions:
Realizing the best way to share the gospel is to use our sphere of influence within the community, we will strongly encourage coaches and players alike to participate in a city recreation league. This is a great way to initiate one-on-one gospel conversations, if we have our eyes open for God to use us.Calvary will provide the opportunity for teams to participate in the community-wide church league. The subject church league is hosted by FUMC, and traditionally has teams from FUMC, Memphis Baptist, St. Columbia, Covenant and Westgate Church of Christ. Calvary will field teams for both girls and boys, with age brackets being 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-15 understanding that we need enough children to participate to form a team. There will be immediate action to develop a more comprehensive devotion curriculum that will be used for the Calvary teams that participate in this program.Calvary will additionally participate in the community-wide church league by providing our gymnasium and resources for league play.We will develop and offer several basketball camps throughout the basketball season. These camps will teach fundamental basketball skills and teach each child the love of Jesus through Bible lessons and teachings.I have been involved with our Upward and Calvary Hardwood programs over the years, have seen many wonderful events, and have developed many wonderful friendships through these programs. So it will not be an easy transition for me, and is not a decision that I take lightly. However, by “encouraging” our coaches/players to share the gospel through participation in a city recreation league and getting involved in the community-wide church league, we will have the opportunity to reach a wider audience within our community. With the addition of a more comprehensive devotion program, our intent of sharing the gospel can be much more intentional and effective, and this new direction will make better utilization of our limited manpower and resources.
So please prayerfully consider joining us by becoming a coach/player in a city recreation league or signing up to coach/ play in the community-wide church league. And yes, we NEED adults from the Calvary family to graciously sign up to be a coach for our church league teams. You can expect more details (through our media outlets) in the very near future regarding all basketball activities.
Thanks so much for your thoughts, prayers and for always being willing to spread the gospel through our recreation and community activities.
Love you,
Greg Pendergrass
