From Our Senior Pastor
By: Paul Thompson

Calvary family,
We’ve had a good summer, don’t you think? Through our combined worship service, we’ve seen a bump in attendance, better overall participation, a healthier sense of morale, and renewed unity and togetherness. We have experienced “church” together.
The one caveat is this: we cannot sustain that togetherness (and the sense of unity it contributes to) and remain in one service in the Sanctuary. There simply isn’t enough seating space. Even after adding additional pews, we cannot accommodate many more people.
In order to allow for the return of folks from vacation, make way for future growth in attendance, and to maintain our togetherness – particularly as we prepare to begin our churchwide message series and corresponding life groups’ study of Ephesians – we have decided that we will relocate our Sunday AM service to the Fellowship Center for a season.
While I recognize we each have certain preferences, enjoy certain traditions, and understand that there are certain trade-offs, we (When I say “we”, I mean the church staff along with the last 4 deacon chairmen) have decided that the prevailing value for us right now as a church family is unity. Our desire to continue getting healthier, stronger, and more unified as a body is more important right now than which building we worship in.
Also, as we look to the future, we believe that a service with high participation promotes high morale, and that in turn is more appealing to newcomers. It is also much more likely that we all will be more inclined to invite unchurched people to attend a service that we ourselves are excited to attend.
By moving to the Fellowship Center temporarily, we can continue to build momentum for the future, grow together through our study of Ephesians, and – Lord willing – renew our focus on our God-given mission of disciple making.
As our people return to normal schedules in the fall and our numbers grow naturally AND as we grow in our commitments to reach the lost around us and our numbers grow supernaturally, we will be evaluating the right time to return to two services. At such a time as the numbers allow for two healthy, vibrant services, we will consider the best options available for locations and times and move accordingly.
As always, our priorities are these:
For God – We gather to honor and worship Him. God and His glory is our focus. We cannot (and will not) allow our personal preferences to take precedence over the worship of God.
For Dothan – We have a mandate to reach the lost all around us. When we stop thinking, caring, or acting with the lost in mind, we lose the right to call ourselves a church. We will make decisions with the mission always at the forefront.
For the World – The church is the Gospel made visible to a lost world. We cannot be (and will not be) sidetracked by discord and dissension over inconsequential issues when there are billions who have never heard of Jesus.
If you have questions, thoughts, or concerns about this, please contact me, one of the church pastoral staff or one of these deacons: Dave Lindey, Don Mills, Sam Tarwater, Philip Baker, Jed Downs, or Sam Robinson. Those men represent the current chairmen of deacons, the current vice-chair, and the last 4 chairmen. Also, please handle your concerns in a God-glorifying, people-edifying way. Remember Ephesians 4:3, which instructs us to “Make every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”
God is moving at Calvary now. He is blessing us. Satan is and will continue to attempt to counter it. Don’t let that happen. Pray for your church. Pray for healthy unity. Pray for the success of the Gospel mission. Pray for God’s will to be done and Him to be glorified.
With You – For Him,
Pastor Paul

Wednesday Night Teacher Training for Children: For all returning teachers, and any new teachers/leaders/servants that want to jump on board, training for our children’s Wednesday night activities is taking place Wednesday, August 5 & 12 from 6:00-7:00 pm. Each training is exactly the same so there is no need to come to both, just please try to make one. Are there spots available?….Yes! We are always in need of leaders and helpers for Wednesday night activities and there are few ministries easier to jump on board than the children’s ministry.
