A Word to the Weary
I came across this quote the other day and it’s just stuck with me since:
“ There is nothing which so certifies the genuineness of a man’s faith as his patience and his patient endurance, his keeping on steadily in spite of everything.”~ D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
Discouragement affects us all at times. And too often we’ve been conditioned by superficial Christianity to believe that ‘good’ Christians never get discouraged, only us weak ones do. But it’s not true. We all do at times. Our pride may keep us from admitting it, and our fear of others’ clichéd responses (“God will never give you more than you can handle”) or their judgmental ones (“Being discouraged is a sin”) may keep us from sharing it, but we are all susceptible to it.
The nation of Israel experienced a collective discouragement before entering the Promised Land. Assured by God of a “good land” He promised them (Deut. 1:8), the people nonetheless nearly gave up on their pursuit of God’s promise.
Deuteronomy 1:26-28 (ESV)
“Yet you would not go up, but rebelled against the command of the Lord your God. And you murmured in your tents and said, ‘Because the Lord hated us he has brought us out of the land of Egypt, to give us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us. Where are we going up? Our brothers have made our hearts melt, saying, “The people are greater and taller than we. The cities are great and fortified up to heaven. And besides, we have seen the sons of the Anakim there.”’
They were discouraged (their hearts “melted”) because …
Things were harder than expected. The process took longer than they had planned.
The people around them were dragging them down by “murmuring” (the contagious whisper of the complainer), by doubting and questioning God, by being pessimistic, and by exaggerating the difficulties.
Sound familiar? Got any tough, circumstances that just seem to continue without an end in sight? Got any people dragging you down with their negativity and complaining?
The result? They were demoralized and felt defeated – and they nearly gave up.
If that’s you, what are you going to do?
Deuteronomy 1:29-33 (ESV)
Then I said to you, ‘Do not be in dread or afraid of them. The Lord your God who goes before you will himself fight for you, just as he did for you in Egypt before your eyes, and in the wilderness, where you have seen how the Lord your God carried you, as a man carries his son, all the way that you went until you came to this place.’ Yet in spite of this word you did not believe the Lord your God, who went before you in the way to seek you out a place to pitch your tents, in fire by night and in the cloud by day, to show you by what way you should go.
A few responses:
Trust God’s promises, not your circumstances, and certainly not your emotions. Fear paralyzes. Trust revitalizes.Find better companions and influencers. The wrong sort of people can “melt the heart” of the most courageous. Find yourself some encouragers.Sometimes I need to take inventory and re-evaluate what I am doing and why. Doing what’s good and right is always worth the cost. Pay special attention to Galatians 6:9!Get up and get going again! And remember: Discouragement is not a sin. Disobedience is!
So stay the course. Do what God is telling you to do. Keep on serving. Be faithful.
For His Glory,
Pastor Paul
