From the Senior Pastor
By: Paul Thompson

Summer is a busy time for most of us. School is out. The kids are home. Vacations are being taken. The lake, the beach, and the mountains all beckon. It’s a busy time at church, too. Services are continuing. Camps are happening. Mission trips are taking place. Ministry continues on. But the challenge is often this – while the financial needs of the church are the same (and sometimes even greater in the summer) giving decreases.
Mark Brooks writes:
“How much a church gets in the offering depends on where payday falls. Does that surprise you? It works like this. If the fifteenth is on a Monday a church will take in less money than if the fifteenth is on a Friday. Why is that? From Monday to Saturday we spend what we make. Then we arrive at church, look at our checkbook and see what we can afford to give. Since there is typically less in the account the church gets less. However if we got paid on a Friday we have less time to spend our money and are much more likely to give on Sunday. If you are like me you sit down once or twice a month to pay your bills. Isn’t it amazing how quickly all that hard earned cash seems to disappear? If you are like most folks you hope that when you get to the bottom of all the bills there will still be some money left to do what you want to do. At the end of paying your bills do you find it hard to come up with money for an offering?”
I think that reality is multiplied in the summer months. With so many demands on our time and resources, too often it seems that the church gets what is left.
Here is Mark’s solution:
“Let me suggest a practical way for you to be able to afford to give. In Matthew 6:33 Jesus says, “But seek first his Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” In keeping with that verse start your bill paying (or vacation planning) by writing the first check to God. When you write the first check to God you really are fulfilling what Jesus said. You are putting God first - above going to get pizza, taking in the newest movie or buying that new whatever that you think you can’t live without. Writing the first check to God ensures that you give and give appropriately.”
Let me encourage you through the remainder of the summer to carefully consider what you will spend and what you will give and to give to the church first. As you do, we will be diligent to use those gifts wisely and for the health of the church and the advance of God’s mission.
Thanks for your partnership in the work of the Kingdom!
