From the Senior Pastor
By: Paul Thompson

I read a fascinating article this past week that was eye opening to me. According the London’s The Telegraph, The number of Christians in Communist China is growing so steadily that by 2030 it could have more churchgoers than America. Furthermore, according to the Gospel Coalition’s Joe Carter, “By mid-century, China may have more citizens who identify as Christians than the United States has citizens.”
According to The Diplomat:
“There would be a good deal of irony in China becoming the largest Christian nation in the world. To begin with, China is officially an atheist nation, and Mao Zedong was often harshly critical of religion during his time in power. More importantly, the Chinese Communist Party has traditionally been hostile to religion in general, and Christianity in particular. This was especially true during
the Cultural Revolution, when believers were often persecuted, imprisoned and tortured. Even in the post-Mao era, the CCP has periodically targeted Chinese Christians, particularly those who belong to the underground churches rather than the officially sanctioned (and heavily regulated) official Christian organizations in China.”
Per research done by ChinaAid, a Texas-based organization that monitors religious freedom, persecution of Chinese Christians continues today and is worse than ever before. They state that persecution has increased by over 55% between 2006 and 2013.
Yet the Church continues to grow in China.
So how is this happening in a communist country that is officially atheist, hostile to Christianity, and one of the most infamous persecutors of the church worldwide?
I believe it is because the Gospel is spreading in China just as Christ intended from the beginning --- person-to-person and face-to-face. Not reliant on a state-endorsed church or big buildings, programs, or “mega-churches”, Chinese believers – often under great threat to themselves and their families – are disciple-making disciples. They are missionaries in their own country, in their own cities, in their own communities, and in their own families.
Neil Cole, in Church 3.0: Upgrades for the Future of the Church, states, “We can learn much by comparing the results of the Communist revolution in Russia with those in China. Both were bloody revolutions that attempted militarily to snuff out all opposition, close down all churches, remove all missionaries, and incarcerate all of the church leaders. Prior to the revolution, the church in Russia was centered on cathedrals led by priests and was distant from the everyday lives of the people. When Soviet Communism seized the church and all her assets, the people had nothing to turn to spiritually, and there was no movement. In China, leaders such as Watchman Nee had already made strides to empower ordinary Christians with the Gospel and let indigenous churches form in homes and places of business. As a result, when the revolution occurred the true church was still intact even after her buildings and leaders were taken away. In fact, the Cultural Revolution of Mao Zedong sought to eliminate all religion from society in China but instead mobilized the church; it grew from about two million Christians in 1949 to more than sixty million. It is estimated today that there may be upward of eighty million Christians in China.”
What about us? If we are dependent upon buildings, programs, and events to grow the Kingdom, we will also fail. If we are committed to being missionary-disciples who make disciples wherever we are and wherever we go, we cannot fail.
Let’s return to the original plan!
In Christ Alone,
Pastor Paul
